The first five months of 2020 has shown a large increase in the amount of freight trains running between China and Europe. The number of trains has uplifted by 72% from January to May and is continuing to surge in comparison to the same period of time in 2019, this information comes from the China Railway Shanghai Group.
Starting in January 2020, more than 200 trains have set off from the trading centre in Yiwu in the Zhejiang province, eastern China. These trains have been carrying 16,672 twenty foot containers to over 36 countries across Europe, as reported by Xinhua, the state news agency. On average a train from Yiwu will take around 12 days to reach Warsaw, 15 days to reach Hamburg and 18 days to reach London. The 13,000km link has been a beneficiary of the COVID-19 pandemic which shut down air freight and also affected sea freight and cargo.
This freight route has also been used to transport antivirus equipment from China to Europe and from 21st March to the end of April, over 660,000 items were sent to European countries including Italy, Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic. Train freight has become the main way of sending postal deliveries between China and Europe and since Coronavirus caused the airline industry to halt, around 6 postal trains have carried over 2,100 tons of mail.
From Yiwu the trains will go to Lithuania and then the deliveries will be distributed across Europe. The China-Europe freight train service sent 19 trains in the last week of May and plans to send three trains a day during June, it’s expected to amount to around 1000 trips over the course of 2020.
