Freight is a term used to describe goods that are transported from one location to another. There are several different types of freight, each with its own unique characteristics and transportation requirements. Understanding the different types of freight can help you choose the best shipping method for your business needs.
Full Truckload (FTL)
Freight Full truckload (FTL) freight is a type of freight that requires a full truck to transport. This type of freight is typically used for large shipments that require a dedicated truck and can take up the entire trailer. FTL shipments are usually the most cost-effective way to ship larger quantities of goods over long distances.
Less Than Truckload (LTL)
Freight Less than truckload (LTL) freight is a type of freight that does not require a full truck to transport. Instead, LTL freight is consolidated with other shipments from different customers to fill a truck. This type of freight is typically used for smaller shipments or when the cost of shipping an FTL is not justified. LTL shipping is usually more expensive than FTL but can be more cost-effective for smaller shipments.
Intermodal Freight
Intermodal freight involves the use of multiple modes of transportation to transportating goods from one location to another. This can include combinations of trucks, trains, ships, and planes. Intermodal shipping is often used for long-distance shipping as it allows for faster transit times and more efficient transportation.
Air Freight
Air freight is a type of freight that is transported by air. This type of freight is typically used for high-value or time-sensitive shipments that need to be delivered quickly. Air freight can be expensive, but it is often the most efficient way to transport goods over long distances.
Ocean Freight
Ocean freight involves the transportation of goods by sea. This type of freight is typically used for international shipping as it is the most cost-effective way to transport large quantities of goods over long distances. Ocean freight can take longer than other shipping methods, but it is often the best option for businesses that need to ship large quantities of goods internationally.
Rail Freight
Rail freight involves the transportation of goods by rail. This type of freight is typically used for long-distance shipping of bulk goods, such as coal or grain. Rail freight is often more cost-effective than other shipping methods for large, heavy shipments.

There are three factors to consider when choosing the best shipping service and method. First, consider what you are shipping, and its dimensions.
For items that are heavier than 200kg or a large volume, Sea shipping is the most cost-effective, allowing you to ship more at a lower rate.
The second consideration is how fast it needs to arrive at the destination and transit times. If time is a factor, air shipping is the way to go. Packages shipped via air usually arrive within 2 to 14 days. On the other hand, packages shipped via ocean and sea shipments take approximately 35 to 70 days to arrive.
The third consideration is determining your shipment budget. If cost is not an issue, air shipping may be your best option. However, the budget-conscious will find ocean shipments to be more cost effective and provide a better transit time.

When buying products from the other side of the world one of the first things to consider is how to get them to your door. There are two main options of freight; Air or Sea.
The choice all depends on what your needs are. If you are looking for the quickest service, the best option is of course air freight. If you are trying to keep your costs down, the sky-high prices of express air freight may not be for you.
There is a chance that the products you’re purchasing will force your hand one way or the other. If your cargo is being sold at an event in 2-3 weeks you won’t be able to wait for delivery. If, on the other hand, the products are large and the RRP is relatively low then importing your cargo by air freight will mean the cost to import the product will be higher than the price you can sell them for.
When you’re shipping internationally, you will need additional documentation in order to ensure that your shipment passes through export and import procedures smoothly. This documentation is required for a number of reasons, including: to prove that the materials being shipped are not hazardous; to prove that the materials being shipped are being shipped in accordance with an embargo, and to help customs determine the correct duties and taxes to charge. A good freight forwarder will help you ensure you have all the documentation you need, but, in general, you’ll want to be prepared to produce: a commercial invoice; a certificate of origin; a packing list; a material safety data sheet / hazardous goods form; a fumigation certificate; and a certificate of origin.
When it comes to packaging your cargo, you don’t need any specific packaging requirements per se. However, because international cargo is often travelling farther than domestic cargo, it will be subject to more handling. To ensure your cargo arrives damage-free, make sure you’re following best practices for packaging. This means using durable packaging, such as pallets, to prevent damage during transport.
The most common way to charge for volume in international air cargo is to use the length, height, and width of a container. For example, if a container is 48cm x 36cm x 12cm, you would divide 48cm by 6000 to determine the unit price for light items (i.e. 48cm divided by 6000 is 0.16). The unit price for larger items is a little more complicated. The formula used to determine the unit price for large items is: Length (cm) x height (cm) x width (cm) divided by 6000.
The larger your shipment is, the more likely you’ll want to ship full container load (FCL) to help reduce landed cost, and potential handling damage, and receive your cargo faster. The only downside to shipping FCL is that it will increase your freight costs. If your shipment is less than 15 cubic meters (CBM), it will be more cost-effective to move it as less than container load (LCL) cargo. Your international freight forwarder can help analyse market rates for your shipment to determine the breakeven point for shipping LCL or FCL.
