You would be correct in thinking that shipping has been around for thousands of years; as people explored the globe by sea, they brought back goods such as jewels, materials, and food to trade in their own country. However, unlike today, shipping back then was not very straightforward at all. Shipping throughout history was extremely laborious, time-consuming, and difficult due to the fact that they had to load and unload the goods individually, in containers such as wooden boxes, sacks, and barrels. Stuffing the cargo into any space they could find, there was a very high risk of damage to the goods, and theft of the goods too. You may have heard the term ‘train transport’ in relation to olden-day shipping methods, but don’t know what it means. This was the transfer of cargo from trains to ships and vice-versa and caused huge delays at ports with some ships taking weeks to load and unload (some even spent more time in the port than on the waves!).
The shipping industry was desperate for an improved way of moving cargo from point A to point B, but the idea of using much larger boxes did not emerge until the later half of the 20th century.

The Birth of Container Shipping: A 1950s Innovation
The idea of packing goods into uniform containers to simplify transport isn’t entirely new — variations existed in rail and canal transport centuries ago. However, it was Malcolm McLean, an American trucking entrepreneur, who truly transformed shipping in the mid-20th century.
In 1956, McLean launched the first successful containerised shipping venture with the converted tanker ship Ideal X, carrying 58 metal containers from New Jersey to Houston.
Why was this so revolutionary?
Before containers, cargo was handled manually — loaded piece by piece (a method known as breakbulk shipping), leading to high costs, theft, damage, and slow turnaround times at ports.
McLean’s innovation offered:
