When it comes to sea transport, it is down to the dimensions of your goods, while air freight depends on the weight of your goods. The more goods you have, the higher the freight rates will be.
Air vs Sea – Which one are you Choosing?
Whether you choose air or sea freight, your mode of transport will determine both the freight costs and the time it takes for your shipping container to arrive. Naturally, air freight tends to be a quicker and more expensive alternative to sea freight, if you are in no hurry with your goods then ocean freight is for you – this is usually around five times cheaper than air freight rates too.
How Far are your Goods Travelling?
Should you be shipping goods from the UK to China or from Australia to China, then it is no surprise that it is going to cost more than a short trip. No matter if your move is port to port or door to door your freight forwarders’ costs will be affected. If your shipping company is going to transport your items all the way from port to door then this will increase the cost.
Where is the Destination Port?
No matter where your goods are travelling in the international shipping industry, custom duties, port congestion charges, transpacific rates and service charges are unavoidable but will vary from country to country. Of course, this all depends on the arrival destination of your goods.
Just like any other industry, international shipping has its low and high peak seasons. The high peak seasons are usually between August and September and just after the Chinese New Year between January and February. Full Container Load (FCL) vs Less Than Container Load (LCL)

- FCL (Full Container Load): You rent the entire container exclusively. This option is cost-effective for large shipments and minimises handling risk.
- LCL (Less than Container Load): Your cargo shares space with other shipments. It’s ideal for smaller loads but comes with slightly longer transit times and additional consolidation fees.

LCL Shipping – Less than Container Load
